What would be needed to obtain this 6 month temporary job seekers visa? I am a recent Masters graduate from a reputable university in the UK with the intention of working professionally in Germany rather than going into academia. Would I have to be an academic to get this visa or would my existing qualifications suffice?

Your qualification suffices. But you need a proof, that you don't need any financial support of the german state during the six months.
