Personal note /detailed application:

Dear Sir,

I am Suranga Chanaka Kumara who has completed my undergraduate studies on environmental science and natural resources management from University of Sabaragamuwa in Sri Lanka. Environmental Science and Natural Resources Management degree is a four year special degree program, which contains conservation biology, environmental science, geology as major areas. I was also followed diploma in Heritage Television Network in Sri Lanka on media presentation and narration to promote conservation biology among the general public.

After completion of my degree, I have been working in the Wilderness and Wildlife Conservation Trust Sri Lanka ( ) as a Research Assistant since 2009. I have been conducting field data collection under the principal investigators namely, Andrew Kittle and Anjali Watson. Main areas of my work are included, island wide collection of field data on leopards through camera trapping, ground surveys and community interviews. The Major objective of this research work is to determine the ecology and distribution of Sri Lankan leopard.

In addition to the work in the Wilderness and Wildlife Conservation Trust of Sri Lanka, I have been volunteering with many organizations to conduct activities related to environmental conservation in Sri Lanka. I have been a regular member of the bird ringing and awareness programs conducted by the Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka. My academic and field knowledge of conservation biology has been shared as a resource person in the training programs conducted for the officials of the Department of Wildlife Conservation. I was a resource person for countless school awareness to promote the biodiversity conservation, with special emphasis on leopards. I have been volunteering to promote the biodiversity conservation in the training programs conducted in the Weeramantry International Centre for Peace Education and Research - WICPER.

As a junior researcher, attached to the Wilderness and Wildlife Conservation Trust of Sri Lanka ( and volunteering other leading environmental organizations in Sri Lanka helped me to understand the deep environmental issues related to species and habitats and value of scientific information for addressing conservation issues.
After the completion of three years with the Wilderness and Wildlife Conservation Trust of Sri Lanka I joined a Sri Lankan government organization named, Waste Management Authority (Western Province) as a Development officer for a six month period. I had a good opportunity to work with the waste management practices performing in Western Province, Sri Lanka such as, waste segregation, Recycling, Reusing, Composting, and worked with all the local authorities in order to implement the waste management practices.
Having completed the contract with the Waste Management Authority I joined the Environmental Foundation Limited Sri Lanka ( as a Fauna Ecologist. At present I’m working there and doing a research on the Leopards in Yala National Park, Sri Lanka using camera traps and several scientific field techniques.
The past few years since my graduation has been very rewarding and eager to apply for a professional career to increase my contribution to the environmental conservatio. I strongly believe that work in Europe will enhance my distinctive background for valuable contribution for future conservation programs and will be a good exposure for my career life.

I would appreciate if you could let me know the opportunities that are available related to the Environmental Science field in your country.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
